The City We Became is an intensely political work of speculative fiction charting two distinct storylines, with both layers of the novel's narrative producing unexpected insights and parallels as they are superimposed atop one another. ![]()

6/7/2023 0 Comments Home coben novel![]() ![]() But ultimately it is an engrossing, occasionally thrilling ride. "Home" is not exactly a happy book-books dealing with kidnapping, the sex trade, and other nasty things can't be. I really liked Steven Weber's narration different from Marosz, who did the early books, but very easy to listen to. Coben's standalones often get so convoluted as to be unbelievable (and sometimes un-followable), but this story's secrets and twists all work. It's a great mystery that hangs together right through the ending. Now Win is back "Home" and the series is back on track. But he's the perfect foil to brooding do-gooder (but also brutally accomplished and anything but effete) Myron Bolitar, and without him the stories don't work as well. Now, I don't know why an effete-looking but brutally accomplished assassin, a semisociopath who also has access to his family's billions, should be the most engrossing character in the book. Then Coben wrote out Windsor Horne Lockwood III. I enjoyed the first 6-7 books in this series, but the last few got too dark and depressing. ![]() ![]() It’s unique and well written, with a quick pacing that turned it into an unputdownable read. However, I didn’t realize just how great a writer she was until I reread her books as an adult. So, yeah, Beverly Cleary: great writer, as certified by 10-year-old me. ![]() I still want to make Fong Quock’s rice “so that each grain was separate and fluffy and there was a crisp brown crust on the bottom of the kettle,” I still want to know how Emily’s crust rose through her custard pie for the church potluck, and I still really, really want to squeeze an entire tube of toothpaste into the bathroom sink. I read most of them multiple times, and certain, VERY IMPORTANT aspects of those books have stuck with me for life. I read every single one of her books growing up - even the lesser-discussed ones like Otis Spofford and Ellen Tebbits with all the angst over something called “long underwear” that was mystifying to me as a kid in the 80s. I always knew Beverly Cleary was a great writer. ![]() 6/6/2023 0 Comments Books like fallen crest high![]() We learned a lot from them, especially Captain Chaos, who entertained us with his wit and wisdom. We met a new group of through-hikers who started in Georgia. The tenting area was cramped and full, so we set up inside the shelter. It revealed a slow-moving portrait of decline and abandonment that has befallen so many American towns and cities, including my own hometown. The walk out of town was not at all dreamlike, but instead a sad reality. When I woke up on Day 15 I found myself on the Main Street of Duncannon, with a 22-pound pack on my back getting ready to head out on the Appalachian Trail. I dreamt that we stayed in a beautiful home, took a walk in a tree-lined neighborhood, drove in a borrowed car to big box stores to replenish supplies (a less-dreamlike part), then went out to dinner with my family. The last 36 hours felt like a dream, thanks to my sister’s and brother-in-law’s wonderful hospitality. Sometimes I have long, vivid dreams that I remember in great detail upon waking.
